Usually these shots take about a 1 hour exposure to get trails like this. It's good to have a shutter remote that can be locked in place to hold the shutter button open that long.
Star trails
The trick to good star shots is a very dark night with no moon or lights from any city of any kind. So I treck out into Amish country to get these shots. Also use a tripod! Cover the lens while pushing the shutter button, then move your hand away. The camera can pick up any and all vibrations, even the shutter button.
